Disney+ Orders Pilot Based on Epcot's Spaceship Earth

Disney+ has ordered a pilot episode for a drama series inspired by Spaceship Earth, the signature attraction at Florida's Epcot theme park.

Screenwriter Jason Fuchs, a co-executive producer on IT: Welcome to Derry, is writing the adaptation while serving as creator and co-producer, according to a report by The Hollywood Reporter.

The project brings together several prominent television and film producers. Michael Waldron, whose credits include Avengers: Doomsday, is executive producing alongside director Lee Toland Krieger, who directed episodes of the drama series You. Producer Adam Fishbach, known for Love, and Adam Fasullo, a partner at Waldron's production company Anomaly Pictures, are also serving as executive producers.

Time travel and global cataclysm

The proposed series takes its starting point from the time-travel theme of the attraction. An official synopsis obtained by The Hollywood Reporter reveals that the story begins when a mission to prevent an impending global cataclysm goes wrong. Following the failure, a small group of teenagers gathered from Earth's past and future must join forces to confront a mysterious threat that spans across time itself.

Spaceship Earth has been a foundational part of Epcot since the theme park first opened to the public in 1982. Housed inside the park's iconic 18-story geodesic sphere at Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, the ride takes visitors on a journey through history to highlight pivotal moments in the evolution of human communication.

Disney theme park ride adaptations

The pilot order continues Disney's established practice of developing popular theme park attractions into narrative film and television projects. The entertainment giant previously turned several of its rides into major feature films, including the successful Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Haunted Mansion, and Jungle Cruise. The company also adapted the Country Bear Jamboree attraction into the 2002 feature film The Country Bears.

Disney+ functions as the primary subscription streaming outlet for Disney's brand portfolio, which frequently expands core theme park intellectual properties across digital platforms. Additional details regarding production schedules or further casting for the pilot have not yet been announced.
