Actor Dennis Haskins, who played Principal Richard Belding on the popular sitcom Saved by the Bell, has died at the age of 75.
His agent, Jay Schachter, confirmed his death on Monday to the industry publication Variety. Schachter, who worked alongside the actor for two decades, did not disclose a cause of death, which the ABC television network reported has not been made public.
Schachter paid tribute to Haskins in a statement, calling his passing a tragic loss for all who knew him. He said that while audiences around the world loved the character of Mr Belding, those fortunate enough to know Haskins personally loved him even more, describing him as a wonderful person who was deeply devoted to his fans and always made time for them.
Role at Bayside High
Haskins was best known for portraying the stern yet well-meaning principal responsible for maintaining order at Bayside High School. As the primary adult character on the show, his role was to keep control over the school hallways and oversee student life.
His character became famous for bursting into scenes to demand what was going on whenever student chaos erupted. His authority was regularly put to the test by a group of high school friends led by Zack Morris, played by Mark-Paul Gosselaar.
Belding also managed the antics of student characters A.C. Slater, portrayed by Mario Lopez, Kelly Kapowski, played by Tiffani Thiessen, Screech Powers, played by Dustin Diamond, and Jessie Spano, played by Elizabeth Berkley.
Saved by the Bell was a popular American teen sitcom that aired on the NBC network and became a major cultural staple for young audiences during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Set in a suburban high school setting, the show focused on comedic teenage adventures, relationships, and campus events.
According to Variety, the original series ran from 1989 to 1992, with Haskins appearing from the first episode to the last across nearly 90 episodes. The series later built a broad international following through syndicated reruns, continuing to air in countries such as the Dominican Republic into the early 2000s.
Franchise legacy and later career
The franchise expanded into multiple spin-off series and television films over the years, with Haskins revisiting the role of Principal Belding across several related projects. He appeared in the spin-off series Saved by the Bell: The New Class, the television film Saved by the Bell: Hawaiian Style, and the original precursor series Good Morning, Miss Bliss.
ABC noted that his final appearance as Principal Belding came in 2015. He joined several of his former main cast members to reprise their classic roles in a special comedy sketch on the late-night program The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Beyond his defining role in teen television, Haskins maintained a broad acting career in film and television spanning several decades. His screen credits included guest roles in acclaimed television series such as the drama Mad Men, the comedy How I Met Your Mother, and the series Abstruse, as well as feature films including A Million Ways to Die in the West and A Bennett Song Holiday.
