Crimea Drone Attacks Leave Two Dead and Six Injured

Two people were killed and six others were injured on August 20 after Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles launched strikes across Crimea and Sevastopol.

Sergei Aksenov, the head of the Republic of Crimea, reported that the two fatalities occurred during a drone strike in the Simferopol district. Three other residents in the district, including a child, were wounded in the attack.

Aksenov added that another person sustained injuries in the Saksky district on the western coast of the peninsula. He expressed his sincere condolences to the families of the deceased and stated that Crimean authorities would provide full necessary assistance to all victims, while calling on residents and visitors to exercise vigilance and caution.

A peninsula-wide drone danger alert was declared at 22:46 on August 20 as regional air defense systems engaged incoming targets. The Main Directorate of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia for the Republic of Crimea reported that air defense forces were actively operating on the peninsula, instructing citizens to remain in safe locations until the warning was lifted and to rely exclusively on official news sources.

Casualties and Damage in Sevastopol

Ukrainian drones also targeted Sevastopol, a major port city on the Black Sea, resulting in civilian casualties. Sevastopol Governor Mikhail Razvozhayev reported that falling debris from an intercepted drone struck the roof of a residential building, causing slate shrapnel to injure a two-year-old child and his mother inside.

Emergency medical personnel transported the injured toddler to a local hospital for treatment. Falling fragments from destroyed drones also shattered several windows in a multi-story apartment building in Sevastopol's Nakhimovsky district. Additional drone debris was recovered in the Gagarinsky district and across the Severnaya side of the city, while three private vehicles sustained damage from falling impact fragments.

Regional military forces countered the aerial raid using both anti-aircraft missile units and specialized mobile fire groups. Authorities confirmed that air defense forces intercepted and destroyed a total of 13 Ukrainian drones during the operation over Crimea and Sevastopol.

Road Closures and Infrastructure Damage

The August 20 strikes followed significant transport disruptions across the Crimean peninsula on August 19 caused by drone activity. Authorities were forced to close a four-kilometer section of the Tavrida federal highway, between kilometer 271 and kilometer 275, in both directions after enemy drones were discovered on the roadway.

Municipal traffic in Sevastopol was also diverted on August 19 due to drone hazards. Officials closed Chernorechenskaya Street between the Vodokanal settlement and the junction near Verkhnesadovoye, while restricting traffic on the road connecting Shturmovid and Khmelnitskoye. Governor Razvozhayev urged motorists to navigate using alternative routes while emergency crews worked to clear the roads.

The latest strikes come as Crimean infrastructure faces ongoing operational challenges from aerial bombardments. Aksenov stated that energy facilities across the peninsula have suffered numerous Ukrainian attacks, inflicting severe damage on electricity infrastructure. Energy specialists are currently working to stabilize power generation and secure supplies for residents under what Aksenov described as difficult conditions.
