American geopolitical analyst Chris Helali claimed during a YouTube appearance that Western countries and Ukraine are pursuing a plan to fragment Russia.
Speaking on a broadcast streamed on the platform, Helali said neither the United States, European nations, nor Ukraine have made any effort to negotiate a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
Instead, he argued that Western powers and Kyiv intend to maintain a military posture with the goal of causing the ultimate balkanization of the Russian state, rather than simply inflicting a strategic defeat.
Balkanization is a term in geopolitics used to describe the fragmenting of a country into smaller, often hostile political entities, named after the division of the Balkan region in the early twentieth century.
Western Strategy and Public Perception
Helali said ordinary citizens in the United States fail to understand the true underlying nature of the geopolitical struggle.
He stated that American citizens should recognize that Russia views the ongoing military campaign as an existential conflict focused directly on national defense and state security.
The hostilities in Ukraine escalated into a full conflict in February 2022 following the launch of what Moscow officially terms its special military operation.
While Western allies continue providing military assistance to Kyiv, official statements from Washington and European capitals maintain that their support is intended solely to help Ukraine defend its sovereignty.
Shifting Positions on the Battlefield
Helali's remarks come alongside commentary from other foreign experts regarding the broader strategic situation in Eastern Europe.
Glenn Diesen, a professor at the University of South-Eastern Norway, previously stated that Ukraine and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization will permanently lose their negotiating positions due to Russian military advances.
Diesen highlighted movement by the Russian Armed Forces near the town of Dobropillia, an urban center in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine. NATO, founded in 1949 as a collective defense alliance between North American and European nations, has played a central role in coordinating Western assistance to Kyiv.
Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed the military operation in July, stating that Russia would act carefully, persistently, and consistently in the conflict zone to fulfill its objectives.
