Britney Spears said she felt she had failed as a mother after one of her sons told her he does not believe in God, in a lengthy personal post on social media that also touched on her past mistakes and her strained relationship with her parents.
The singer posted on X on Friday, August 7, sharing a long piece of writing setting out her thoughts. Alongside it she published a photograph of her two sons, Sean Preston and Jayden, taken when they were still children. She said that at the time, her parents, Jamie and Lynn Spears, had secretly taken the boys to the beach without her.
She said she had wondered why she was never part of those pleasant secret outings. She said she felt deeply hurt living in a country where it was considered acceptable for people such as her mother and father to lead secret lives with her children, adding that she had literally knelt down and cried for two months over it.
Son's comments about God
Spears went on to describe a conversation she had the previous week with one of her sons. She said he told her it was all science and that he did not believe in God.
She said the revelation affected her deeply, since she prays every day. She said that in that moment she believed she had failed as a mother, because she knows there is a Holy Spirit up in the kingdom of heaven, that she has been there and felt it herself. She said she wanted to tell her children, and people in general, that she is sorry for her past mistakes.
Reflecting on her rise to fame
Spears then looked back over her life, from her childhood fame on the Mickey Mouse Club through to her rise to the top of pop music. She said that as a child star on the show, and later as a teenage pop idol, she was never able to be herself, the real Spears.
Describing how she experienced fame, she said she felt she had been manipulated and that people around her had taken advantage of her. She said she used to be incredibly smart and had been completely brainwashed inside an ignorant system in which every single person around her exploited her. She said she missed the excitement she used to have in her eyes, being alive when she was younger, always eager to please others and thirsty for life, and that she used to be incredibly passionate about everything.
Sadness over lost years
Closing the post, Spears expressed sadness over years she feels she lost and cannot get back. She wrote that she will never get those years back. She added that she felt proud for speaking about all of it, saying it is honestly incredibly sad.
