Attica Regional Governor Nikos Hardalias signed a 1.22 million euro road redevelopment agreement with Metamorfosi Mayor Stratos Saraoudas at the regional headquarters on August 21, 2026.
The program contract launches an extensive infrastructure project covering approximately 1,060 metres across sections of Irakleiou, Bizaniou, and Agiou Nektariou streets in the Municipality of Metamorfosi. Financed through the Attica Region's own resources, the contract carries a total budget of 1.22 million euros plus value-added tax.

The joint project focuses on improving road safety, upgrading the aesthetic and functional quality of public spaces, and ensuring unobstructed pedestrian traffic. Special measures are included throughout the design to guarantee accessibility for people with disabilities and mobility impairment.
Road extension and infrastructure upgrades
A central element of the redevelopment involves the complete opening of Bizaniou Street between Pefkon Street and Solomou Street. The extension will establish a direct and smooth connection between local neighborhoods and the Metamorfosi city centre.

Planned construction work includes extensive repaving with asphalt, anti-skid treatments, new sidewalk construction, and the rebuilding of existing pavements. Workers will also install tactile paving strips for visually impaired pedestrians, access ramps, disabled crossings, updated road signage, and a new street lighting network.
Attica Region road safety strategy
Following the signing ceremony, Hardalias said the initiative in Metamorfosi forms part of a comprehensive regional policy to create safer transport conditions throughout Attica. He emphasized that road safety is a constant priority requiring continuous presence, systematic effort, and multi-level intervention.

Hardalias noted that the road network managed by the Attica Region covers 1,623 kilometres and includes thousands of critical infrastructure features, ranging from traffic signals and pedestrian crossings to overpasses, lighting, and safety barriers.
He stated that 58 percent of the road safety projects planned under the region's strategic roadmap through 2028 have already been activated. According to Hardalias, the administration aims to eliminate dangerous road locations and improve conditions for drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and cyclists.

Hardalias added that regional officials do not view road safety piecemeal, but as a daily responsibility toward human life that must deliver measurable accident prevention results. He affirmed that close cooperation with Mayor Saraoudas and municipal authorities will continue to build functional, human, and sustainable cities.
Property compensations and municipal impact
Mayor Saraoudas described the signing as a milestone for Metamorfosi, calling it one of the largest infrastructure projects ever launched in the municipality. He noted that municipal leaders designated the road redevelopment as a top priority during their initial post-election meetings with the regional governor.
Saraoudas explained that completing the Bizaniou Street opening involves finalizing municipal action to compensate four property owners whose houses will be demolished for the road expansion. He thanked Governor Hardalias for taking action and providing solutions to municipal problems.
The signing ceremony at the regional headquarters was also attended by Margarita Varsou, Vice-Governor of the Northern Sector of Attica, and Mairi Miska, Director of Development Planning for the Attica Region.
