Disabling specific Google background features on an Android smartphone can significantly increase the operating lifespan and battery performance of the device, technology publication MakeUseOf reported.

Writers at the technology outlet emphasized that while many integrated Google services remain essential for daily device operation, turning off unnecessary secondary background tools extends battery charge and reduces overall hardware wear.

Among the primary power drains highlighted was the Now Playing feature, which continuously listens to nearby music in order to identify track titles. Writers explained that because the option operates constantly in the background, it consumes substantial battery power. Deactivating automatic voice recognition for the wake phrase Hey Google was also cited as an effective way to boost standalone battery time.

Android is a mobile operating system developed by American technology company Google that powers billions of smartphones globally. While Google embeds core services into Android devices to manage software syncing and system permissions, several built-in utilities run background tasks that drain power even when smartphones are idle.

Location tracking and application permissions

The publication further advised users to turn off the Google Maps feature that continuously tracks user movement. In addition, specialists recommended opening device settings to forbid almost all installed applications from accessing location data, restricting permission exclusively to essential programs such as navigation software.

The recommendations for extending smartphone lifespan come as replacing handheld devices becomes increasingly expensive. Analysts at market research firm International Data Corporation previously reported that the era of cheap smartphones has ended, attributing the shift to a sharp rise in prices for DRAM and NAND memory modules.

Dynamic Random Access Memory, or DRAM, serves as the short-term working memory for mobile processors, while NAND flash memory provides non-volatile storage for user files and operating systems. International Data Corporation is a global market intelligence firm that monitors semiconductor supply chains and consumer technology markets.
