Wildfires across Castilla y León have improved noticeably in recent hours, but several fires in León province still worry firefighting services, according to the regional government.
The Veguellina fire, in the municipality of Villafranca del Bierzo, gave crews no respite overnight as wind pushed flames toward the village of Moreda. Firefighters had contained the fire on Friday, but a flare-up late in the afternoon, driven by strong southerly gusts, forced them to step up their efforts.
Preventive evacuations continued in Moreda, San Pedro de Olleros and Prado de Somoza. The Junta de Castilla y León said the flames crossed a firebreak and advanced quickly toward Moreda, and the fire remains at potential severity index (IGR) 2.
Overnight, teams worked to secure the perimeter. In areas too difficult for heavy machinery, crews used three chainsaws and cleared ground by hand to prevent new flare-ups.
There was better news elsewhere. The San Tirso fire, in Vega de Valcarce, was downgraded to IGR 0, and the A-6 motorway, closed on Thursday afternoon, has fully reopened. The Valdelaloba fire in Toreno also eased, joining Moreda and La Utrera at IGR 0.
Fermoselle and Burgohondo
In Zamora, the Fermoselle fire, which reached IGR 2 on Wednesday, dropped to level 1 on Saturday, though a large operation remains in place with 23 technicians, dozens of ground crews and 17 aircraft.
The Burgohondo fire stayed at IGR 2, ten days after it was declared, with 126 environmental agents, 64 ground crews and 31 helicopters and water planes among the resources deployed.
