While many consumers leave these ports unused, specialists at How-To Geek explained that router hardware often includes built-in software services designed to share external devices across a local network.
Connecting an external hard disk drive (HDD) or solid-state drive (SSD) to a router's USB port allows the drive to function as network-attached storage. Once connected and configured, any desktop computer, laptop, or smartphone connected to the local Wi-Fi network can access, store, and transfer files wirelessly.
