WhatsApp Users Can Disable Meta AI: Here's How

WhatsApp cannot delete its Meta AI icon outright, but users can limit or avoid the assistant with a few simple steps.

WhatsApp Users Can Disable Meta AI: Here's How

WhatsApp users who want nothing to do with the app's built-in artificial intelligence tools do have options for limiting or effectively switching off the feature, even though the assistant's icon cannot be removed entirely.

Meta AI is a virtual assistant integrated directly into WhatsApp chats. It can offer intelligent replies, generate text and analyze documents. It appears as a blue circle in the bottom right corner of the screen when users are viewing their list of conversations.

How the AI Features Work

WhatsApp, the messaging platform now owned by Meta, was created in 2009 and has added a steady stream of new features since then. For a little over a year, users have been able to run AI-powered searches within the app or chat directly with Meta AI.

Tapping the blue circle opens the Meta AI conversation, which then sits alongside a user's other chats. Users who want to avoid the assistant should simply not tap that icon. If the Meta AI chat has already been opened, it can be removed by pressing and holding on it on Android devices, or by swiping it to the left on an iPhone.

It is also advisable to avoid typing @Meta AI within conversations, since the assistant only activates in specific situations and only when a user actively requests it.

Why Some Users Want It Off

Despite its convenience, Meta AI on WhatsApp comes with drawbacks. The tool can raise privacy concerns, since even with protected servers, many users are uneasy about an AI system having any presence in their private conversations.

Beyond privacy, the assistant also has direct effects on a device's performance. Running AI features consumes battery power, storage space and mobile data, since the technology requires significant energy and the images it generates can quickly take up considerable storage.

For these reasons, it may be worth limiting the use of Meta AI on WhatsApp, depending on individual needs and how much a user relies on the feature.
