Greek fashion designer Vassilis Zoulias has claimed that singer Giorgos Mazonakis would still be alive if he had walked out of an Athens medical clinic instead of seeking an instant solution.
Speaking during a television interview on Friday, Zoulias said the performer was denied the chance to turn his life around because he believed a rapid fix could resolve his problems overnight.
Zoulias explained that what hurt him the most was the loss of the singer's future, adding that he viewed Mazonakis as a brother and saw reflections of his own past in the artist's difficulties.

Interview on Studio at 3
The designer made the comments during an appearance on the television program Studio at 3 on Friday, November 6. He argued that the death of Mazonakis showed that easy and quick answers do not exist for people struggling with substance issues.
Drawing on his own history of addiction, Zoulias noted that he understood the urge to find an immediate remedy. He explained that people facing similar battles crave a solution that works as rapidly as a line of drugs reaches the brain or an injection enters the bloodstream.
Speaking from his own experience rather than on behalf of Mazonakis, Zoulias said people often believe their feelings and circumstances can transform completely in 24 hours. He insisted that such a rapid emotional shift is impossible.
The Visit to Karneadou Street
Zoulias expressed firm conviction that the singer could have prevented his death if he had chosen to leave a private practice on Karneadou Street.
The designer said Mazonakis should have simply said goodbye, shut the door behind him, and walked away. Had he done so, Zoulias argued, nothing bad would have happened and the singer would still be alive today.
The deepest tragedy, Zoulias said, was that Mazonakis was robbed of the opportunity to change his life in the days and months ahead. Because survival would have given him another chance the following day, week, or month, the loss of that possibility caused Zoulias profound grief.
Earlier Meetings and Tributes
The designer had previously spoken about his relationship with the singer following his passing. On September 30, Zoulias recalled that the two men had once arranged an appointment so that he could take Mazonakis somewhere, but the singer failed to show up.
Days earlier, on September 24, Zoulias praised Mazonakis as a highly worthy artist. He admitted at the time that only after the performer had died did he fully appreciate his enormous artistic talent.
Background on Zoulias and Mazonakis
Zoulias is one of the most prominent names in Greek fashion, known for vintage-inspired couture and dressing high-profile figures internationally. He has spoken candidly in Greek media about overcoming severe drug addiction during his younger years, frequently addressing recovery and mental health.
Mazonakis was a household name in Greece and a defining figure in contemporary laiko music for more than three decades. Known for his theatrical stage presence and raspy vocal delivery, his sudden passing in autumn 2026 prompted widespread mourning across the Greek entertainment world.
Karneadou Street, where the practice mentioned by Zoulias is located, is a street in the upscale Kolonaki district of central Athens, an area widely known for housing private medical practices and specialist clinics.
