Ukrainian defense forces engaged in 170 combat clashes with Russian troops along the front line on August 15, according to an operational update from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The General Staff, which oversees operational planning for Ukraine's military, reported intense ground activity across multiple sectors of the eastern front, where fighting has remained concentrated.
Russian assault units launched their heaviest offensive push in the Pokrovsk sector, where Ukrainian troops repelled 23 separate attacks during the day. Military commanders summarized that Russian forces attempted to advance in the areas of Vasylivka, Udachne, Kotlyne, and Novopidhorodne, as well as pushing toward the settlements of Belitske, Novyi Donbas, Shevchenko, Novohryshyne, Serhiivka, and Novopavlivka. Two combat engagements in the sector were still ongoing late in the day.
Pokrovsk is a vital road and rail junction in western Donetsk Oblast. The city serves as a major logistical hub supporting Ukrainian military operations across the Donbas region, making it a key strategic target for Russian forces.
In the Sloviansk sector, Ukrainian defense forces stopped 13 attempts by Russian troops to press forward. Ground fighting was recorded around the settlements of Reznykivka, Kryva Luka, and Zakitne, as well as toward Rai-Oleksandrivka and Pyskunivka, with three combat engagements remaining active.
Ukrainian units also repelled seven enemy advance attempts in the Lyman sector. Russian units mounted assaults toward Cherneshchyna, Novyi Myr, Drobysheve, Lyman, and Dibrova, as well as in the vicinity of Redkodub and Novoselivka.
Sloviansk and Lyman are strategically vital urban centers in northern Donetsk Oblast. Lyman functions as a major railway hub, while Sloviansk forms a principal industrial anchor in the region's northern defensive belt.
Clashes reported across northern front lines
Further north in the Kupiansk direction, Russian forces carried out eight attacks toward the settlements of Radkivka and Kurylivka. One combat clash in that area was still underway by the evening.
Kupiansk is a major transport center in Kharkiv Oblast situated along the Oskil River, where Ukrainian forces have maintained defensive lines against repeated Russian offensive efforts.
In the Pivdenno-Slobozhanskyi sector, Russian troops stormed Ukrainian positions four times in the area of Vovchanski Khutory and pushed toward the settlements of Zybyne and Okhrimivka.
Along the Pivnichno-Slobozhanskyi and Kursk directions, three combat clashes took place from the start of the day. Russian forces also carried out 37 bombardments targeting Ukrainian military positions and local settlements.
Tactical update on Kostiantynivka sector
In its latest assessment covering military operations on August 13 and 14, the Institute for the Study of War reported that Russian forces continued offensive operations in the Kostiantynivka-Druzhkivka tactical area but achieved no confirmed progress.
The Washington-based think tank previously noted at the end of July that the tactical situation in and around Kostiantynivka in Donetsk region was deteriorating, though Russian troops had not captured the city despite assertions from Moscow.
Kostiantynivka and Druzhkivka are key industrial towns located south of Kramatorsk in Donetsk Oblast, forming part of the urban belt in eastern Ukraine where heavy artillery and infantry engagements have persisted.
