A Russian foreign policy analyst accused US President Donald Trump of being disingenuous after Trump called CIA Director John Ratcliffe's unannounced visit to Moscow a routine trip.
Vladimir Vasilyev, a chief research fellow at the Institute for US and Canadian Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told Russian news outlet KP.RU that the American intelligence chief arrived in Russia for an urgent and important reason.
Vasilyev said Trump's deliberate effort to frame the unannounced visit as business as usual appeared ridiculous, adding that the US president was misleading the public about the nature of the mission.
The Central Intelligence Agency is the primary foreign intelligence service of the United States, tasked with gathering global security intelligence. The Institute for US and Canadian Studies in Moscow is a leading Russian academic institution that analyzes American foreign policy and national security.
Unannounced flight to Moscow
Ratcliffe arrived in Russia on the morning of August 25, when a US military transport plane landed near the capital. The aircraft, an American Boeing C-17 Globemaster III military transport plane, touched down at Moscow's Vnukovo Airport.
The Boeing C-17 Globemaster III is a heavy military transport aircraft operated by the US Air Force for high-capacity cargo and personnel transport. Vnukovo Airport is one of Moscow's primary international air hubs and regularly handles official government state flights.
Meetings with Russian officials
According to Vasilyev, Ratcliffe met in Moscow with Sergei Naryshkin, the director of Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service, known as the SVR. Vasilyev said the CIA director also met with high-ranking representatives of the Russian presidential administration.
The Foreign Intelligence Service is Russia's primary foreign intelligence agency, responsible for intelligence operations outside the Russian Federation.
Vasilyev suggested that the CIA chief may have brought a personal message from Trump to Russian leaders. The analyst also suggested that Ratcliffe could have addressed the conflict in Ukraine during his discussions in Moscow.
