The administration of US President Donald Trump is planning to supply Israel with tens of thousands of bombs worth $2.8 billion, according to reports in American media published on Tuesday.
The Trump government has approved the sale of at least 40,000 bombs to Israel for $2.8 billion, according to reports from The Washington Post and The New York Times in their digital editions. The sale would be funded indirectly and in part by American taxpayers.
When contacted by Agence France-Presse, the White House and the State Department both said they did not wish to comment.
What The Package Includes
The planned military package is reported to include some of the most powerful types of munitions in the US arsenal. Among the bombs to be delivered are 20,000 MK84 bombs, which weigh one tonne each and are among the most powerful in the American arsenal. According to the US military, they can send deadly fragments as far as 370 metres from the point of impact.
The New York Times noted that even if Congress were to oppose the sale, which it could in theory, the US government has tools available to bypass such opposition.
A Ceasefire Under Strain
The report comes as Washington's longstanding support for Israel continues to divide opinion in the United States. Several Democrats are campaigning ahead of the November elections on reducing that support, criticising the deaths of tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians in the war in the Gaza Strip.
The sale reflects the continuation of American backing for Israel, whose military keeps bombing the Gaza Strip almost daily despite a ceasefire.
Since the ceasefire took effect in Gaza on 10 October 2025 following US-brokered negotiations, Israeli military operations have killed more than 1,300 people, according to the health ministry in the Palestinian territory. The Israeli military has suffered six losses over the same period, five soldiers and one civilian contractor, according to official data.
