Watchmaker Timex and Japanese brand BEAMS have released the Square Camper, a limited-edition watch that pairs analogue movement with a retro digital aesthetic.
The collaboration celebrates the 50th anniversary of BEAMS, with total global production capped at 500 pieces. Pre-orders opened on July 24, followed by a general retail launch across Japan on August 15.

At first glance, the Square Camper resembles a classic digital wristwatch from the 1980s. However, closer inspection reveals an analogue dial with physical clock hands operating behind the crystal display.
Hybrid Design and Optical Illusion
The timepiece combines the rectangular case of the Timex Classic Digital with the dial design of the Original Camper field watch. BEAMS stated that the watch exterior was manufactured using custom new moulds to achieve the hybrid appearance.

The visual illusion relies on graphics printed on the inner surface of the acrylic crystal that resemble a digital LCD display. Beneath the printed glass, traditional clock hands rotate across a physical Camper dial, giving the watch a purely analogue operation despite its digital look.
The model is produced in two metal finishes, silver and gold. Both versions feature a brass case, an acrylic crystal, and an expandable stainless steel bracelet designed for simple adjustment and retro styling.

Technical Specifications and Positioning
Inside, the timepiece relies on a Japanese-made quartz movement. The watch weighs approximately 65 grams and provides water resistance up to 30 metres.
The design does not attempt to compete with modern smartwatches. Instead, it aims to capture the nostalgia associated with retro digital timepieces, such as classic Casio models from the same era.

Background and Brand History
Timex, founded in Connecticut in 1854, is one of America's longest-established watchmakers. Its Original Camper model was developed as a lightweight, military-inspired field watch built for utility and high legibility.
BEAMS was established in Tokyo in 1976 as a small shop in Harajuku before growing into one of Japan's most prominent lifestyle retailers. The brand frequently collaborates with international apparel and watch labels on limited anniversary releases.
Pricing and Global Availability
Exclusivity is a key aspect of the release, with each watch caseback engraved with the text Limited 500 Pieces. BEAMS has also created custom packaging specifically for the collaborative release.
In Japan, the silver version sells for 23,980 yen (129 euros), while the gold model is priced at 26,400 yen (142 euros). No international launch has been announced, making the limited run unlikely to see wide distribution outside Japan.
