The perfect dog walk lasts exactly 67 minutes, includes 16 opportunities to sniff and features at least one splash in water, according to a survey of 1,800 dog owners commissioned by Animal Friends Pet Insurance.
Owners were asked what kind of everyday outing their dog appeared to enjoy most. The majority said the ideal walk takes place in open fields, woodland or parks, where dogs can explore and run freely. Other ingredients include rolling in grass or mud, finding sticks and meeting at least three friendly dogs along the way.
Thirty-eight percent of respondents said their dog’s happiness matters more than their own on a walk. Nearly eight in ten admitted feeling guilty about sticking to the same route every day.
Jen Hipwell, head of veterinary services at Animal Friends Pet Insurance, said walks are one of the best parts of life with a dog and a chance to spend time together and explore somewhere new. She added that every dog is different, so a great day out will look different depending on the animal’s age, breed, health, personality and confidence.
Safety ranked as the most important factor when owners choose a walking route, ahead of quiet surroundings and open spaces. The Lake District, the New Forest and the South West Coast Path topped owners’ wish lists for dream walking destinations.
Before heading out, owners said they consider weather conditions, how hot the ground is for their dog’s paws and the likelihood of encountering other animals. More than half admitted they would not know how to identify and avoid potential hazards such as steep terrain and coastal risks.
Hipwell advised checking routes and weather in advance, particularly during hot weather, and packing fresh water, treats, a lead, a favourite toy or somewhere comfortable for the dog to rest.
The findings prompted pet experts to compile a guide to some of Britain’s best dog-walking routes to help owners find safe and stimulating places.
How often should dogs be walked?
Separately, Professor Nicholas Dodman, CEO of the Center for Canine Behavior Studies, told the Daily Mail that owners should walk their dogs at least three shorter walks plus two longer walks each day. He said longer walks provide exercise while shorter outings cover bathroom breaks and alleviate boredom.
For athletic breeds, Dodman recommended a longer walk of three to five miles in the middle of the day and another couple of miles before dinner. Experts note that the general rule should be adjusted for a dog’s specific breed, disposition and habits.
