Taiwan to Give Citizens $313 Cash Payout After AI Surge

Taiwan will give every citizen a cash payout of 10,000 New Taiwan dollars, or roughly $313, following exceptional economic growth driven by global technology demand. President Lai Ching-te announced the universal payment plan on August 17, as reported by the Taipei Times.

The government plans to allocate 235.7 billion New Taiwan dollars, equivalent to $7.4 billion, in its 2027 budget to fund the distributions across the island's population.

Official data from the Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics indicates that Taiwan's economy performed significantly better than earlier economic forecasts had anticipated. Economic growth reached 14.15 percent in the first half of the year, representing the highest first-half expansion recorded in Taiwan over the last five decades.

AI demand drives record economic growth

President Lai explained that the surge in economic output was primarily fueled by rapid development in Taiwan's semiconductor industry and its broader information and communications technology sectors. Global demand for artificial intelligence applications, high-performance computing infrastructure, and cloud services has accelerated dramatically, spurring increased commercial orders, export revenues, and capital investments.

Because government revenues and expenditures are projected to remain in balance without requiring net borrowing, officials elected to channel surplus gains directly back to the public. Lai stated that incorporating cash payments into the national budget will allow citizens to directly share in what he described as Taiwan's AI dividends.

Taiwan serves as a key pillar of the global electronics supply chain, housing advanced manufacturing facilities that supply components to major technology corporations worldwide. In May, Taiwan overtook India in total stock market capitalization, driven largely by rapid market valuation gains at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co, the world's largest contract chip manufacturer.

Surge in drone exports to Europe

Alongside microchip manufacturing, Taiwanese industrial exporters have also expanded sales of advanced hardware to European partners. Exports of Taiwanese drones to Europe during the first quarter of 2026 surpassed the total volume of drone exports recorded for the entirety of the previous year.

Poland and the Czech Republic emerged as the leading European destinations for these shipments. Both countries operate as critical transport and logistics hubs facilitating the movement of commercial and specialized equipment into Eastern Europe for subsequent re-export to Ukraine.

A major share of the Taiwanese drones dispatched to European destinations is purchased by private commercial entities and civil organizations before being transferred to Ukrainian operators.
