Peruvian actress Stephanie Cayo said she wants to become a mother one day, but only once she has built a stable, well-established home with a partner, addressing weeks of pregnancy speculation involving her boyfriend, Spanish singer Alejandro Sanz.
The rumors began after Sanz shared a photo of Cayo forming a heart shape with her hands over her belly, which quickly circulated on social media and led fans to speculate the couple was expecting a child.
Cayo addressed the speculation directly in an interview with Mexican host Aislinn Derbez on her program "La Magia del Caos." She told Derbez that she did want to have children, though not right away, explaining that motherhood is something she longs for but not something she is rushing into.
Cayo on approaching 40
The actress, the youngest of the Cayo sisters, told Derbez the idea of having a child has started weighing on her more heavily in recent times. She said the thought had appealed to her for a while now, and that turning 40 could be an interesting moment for it, since she is getting close to that age.
At the same time, Cayo made clear she felt no pressure or urgency. She said she was in no rush at all, but that the idea did appeal to her, and that she wanted it to happen once she had a well-formed, well-established home.
No plans to have children alone
Cayo was firm that she does not see motherhood as something to pursue on her own. She said she would rather not become a mother at all than do it without a partner, adding that doing so alone made no sense to her. Starting a family without a partner, or through a donor, is not something she is considering, because she believes raising a child requires support from both sides.
Even so, she said she respected women who do choose to become mothers on their own. She said she did not want to send the world a message suggesting she could handle everything by herself, calling that stance questionable and debatable, while stressing her respect for single mothers.
She went on to describe her view of parenting as a shared effort, saying people need to lean on one another and be leaned on in return, and that teamwork was, to her, the most important part of raising a child.
