Spider-Man: Brand New Day Breaks US Opening Record

Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the fourth Spider-Man film starring Tom Holland and directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, has broken the record for the biggest opening weekend in United States box office history, earning $360 million in its first three days.

The film surpassed Avengers: Endgame, which had held the record since 2019 with a $357 million opening weekend, a figure not adjusted for inflation. Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman said in a statement carried by Variety that records are made to be broken, but that the studio would be very proud to hold this one for as long as it lasts.

According to trade press, Brand New Day and Endgame are the only two films to have topped $300 million on their US release. The new film also opened $100 million ahead of its predecessor, Spider-Man: No Way Home, at the same stage of release.

Nearing $1 billion worldwide

Internationally, Brand New Day has already brought in $932 million, the second-best global opening ever behind Endgame's $1.2 billion. Forecasts suggest it could pass $2 billion worldwide, a mark No Way Home came close to with $1.9 billion in late 2021.

Record start in France

In France, most screenings sold out from opening day. The film drew 650,130 admissions on Wednesday, July 29 alone, the country's best opening since Avengers: Endgame seven years ago and the tenth-biggest opening in French cinema history. It passed 1 million admissions in two days and 2 million in four, putting it on track to beat No Way Home's French total of 7.3 million tickets.
