Spanish Air and Space Force Commander Juan Bengoechea has deployed to Romania to lead Eurofighter jet patrols guarding NATO's eastern flank near Ukraine.
Bengoechea, a pilot from Madrid, serves as the squadron chief of the 14th Wing based at Albacete Air Base in central Spain. He commands the 53 military personnel who make up the Paznic Tactical Air Detachment, operating out of a military base in Romania.
The Spanish detachment is carrying out a three-week joint deployment alongside the German Air Force's 71st Squadron under NATO's Enhanced Air Policing mission. The defensive framework is designed to deter external aggression and protect the territorial sovereignty of allied nations along the alliance's eastern boundary.
NATO established its enhanced air policing operations to safeguard alliance airspace following heightened security concerns in Eastern Europe. Romania's strategic location on the Black Sea, bordering Ukraine, makes its airspace a vital defensive priority for NATO partner forces.
Scramble alerts and border interceptions
The daily routine at the Romanian air base requires constant combat readiness. Spanish Eurofighter jets have already completed their first real interception mission during the deployment, scrambling alongside German aircraft after sensors detected a suspected airspace border violation.
Standard protocol demands that interceptor aircraft must be airborne within fifteen minutes of an alarm sounding. To meet that timeline, pilots execute rapid combat maneuvers at supersonic speeds, testing both aircraft reliability and crew performance under extreme pressure.

The commander acknowledged the personal toll of leaving his family behind in Spain, but stressed that daily camaraderie in the hangars helps personnel manage deployment stress.
