An almost total solar eclipse will cover up to 96 per cent of the sun across the United Kingdom this evening, offering most people a once-in-a-lifetime viewing opportunity. Clear skies are expected across most of the country as the moon gradually slides across the face of the sun starting from about 6.15pm.

Every region can expect at least a 90 per cent blackout, with peak darkness lasting just two minutes before lifting. The event coincides with the peak of the annual Perseids meteor shower, when thousands of space rocks burn up in Earth's atmosphere as the planet passes through a belt of comet debris. Cities will experience comparatively low light pollution in the early evening, though many street lights will turn on automatically, while countryside skies will be magnificently dark.

Scotland will see the peak eclipse first, reaching maximum coverage at 7.05pm in Edinburgh and Glasgow. In Truro, Cornwall, maximum coverage occurs 11 minutes later at 7.16pm. Partial eclipse begins at 6.08pm in Edinburgh and Glasgow, 6.12pm in Dublin, 6.13pm in Manchester and Liverpool, 6.15pm in Birmingham, 6.17pm in Bristol, London and Cardiff, and 6.18pm in Truro. Maximum coverage hits at 7.10pm in Dublin, Manchester and Liverpool, 7.11pm in Birmingham, and 7.12pm in Bristol, London and Cardiff. The eclipse ends at 8.00pm in Edinburgh, 8.04pm in Dublin, Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham, 8.06pm in Glasgow, Bristol, London and Cardiff, and 8.10pm in Truro.

Historical context and international path of totality

The last major eclipse remembered by readers in their 30s and older occurred on August 11, 1999, when cloudy morning skies frustrated millions who took the day off work. Partial eclipses during the 1970s reached 60 per cent or less. The next full solar eclipse over the British Isles will not take place until 2081, when a baby born today will be 55 years old.

The UK falls outside the path of totality, which begins in Siberia and travels across the west coast of Iceland and northern Spain from Bilbao to Barcelona. Inhabitants of Greenland will experience full darkness after last seeing it during the Polar Night that ended in mid-February. Paris will observe a 92 per cent eclipse, Berlin will see 85 per cent, and the Mediterranean islands of Majorca and Menorca will catch the final view of the 100 per cent eclipse before sunset.

Visual effects and top viewing locations

BBC visual journalists noted that atmospheric changes will accompany the shadow. "The temperature will suddenly drop and the wind slows, and even changes direction," the BBC team stated.

"For a brief moment a flare of sunlight on the moon's rim will make it seem as if a huge diamond ring is hanging in the sky. Then the flare will vanish, as if a giant hole has devoured the sun," the BBC team added.

Spectators are advised to pick a west-facing viewing spot. Recommended locations include Clifton Downs overlooking the Avon Gorge in Bristol and the Bedruthan Steps near Newquay in Cornwall, where enthusiasts will distribute limited supplies of protective glasses. Venues selling tickets for eclipse parties include Bamburgh Castle in Northumberland, the Poltimore Inn at North Molton on Exmoor, and the Royal Observatory in Greenwich.

Eye safety and projection methods

Medical experts warn against looking directly at the sun for any duration. "Looking directly at the sun during a solar eclipse can cause damage to the retina," said Mohamed Elalfy, president of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. "Crucially, the retina has no pain receptors, so people will not feel the damage as it happens."

Experts also warned that protective glasses remaining from the 1990s have likely lost effectiveness over time. Only glasses certified with ISO safety standard 12312-2 are recommended for direct viewing.

The safest viewing method is standing with your back to the sun and holding a card with a pinprick hole a few inches above a sheet of white paper, projecting an image of the sun's progress. Using a colander creates dozens of simultaneous pinhole projections, allowing spectators to watch a multi-eclipse.
