Smartphone users should turn off fast charging features on their devices to prevent severe overheating that can ruin hardware, according to technology portal MakeUseOf.
Journalists at the media outlet assessed the practical benefits of high-speed charging in modern mobile phones, but highlighted that excessive heat remains the primary drawback of the technology. Writing for the portal, author Pankil Shah identified high battery and handset temperatures as a compelling reason for users to turn off fast charging either temporarily or permanently.

Thermal output increases alongside charging power, meaning that higher wattage delivery results in hotter operating temperatures. Over time, constant exposure to elevated heat can permanently destroy both the internal battery and the handset itself. Consequently, experts recommend disabling high-speed charging options or relying on low-power charging adapters during warm summer months or whenever phones operate in hot environments.
Heat hazards and accessory guidance
Heavy processing tasks can compound thermal issues when paired with rapid power delivery. MakeUseOf specifically highlighted mobile gaming and using a phone as a car navigation system as high-temperature scenarios where fast charging should be avoided to protect internal components from thermal stress.
Physical accessories can also contribute to heat retention. Shah observed that an excessively thick protective case or dense cover traps heat around the chassis during operation. If a smartphone body frequently warms up during daily use or while plugged into a charger, Shah advised replacing the protective cover with a different design to allow better heat dissipation.
Battery degradation and alternative options
Lithium-ion batteries used in modern smartphones are sensitive to chemical stress caused by thermal exposure. Fast charging protocols deliver higher electrical current or voltage to replenish capacity quickly, which inherently increases internal resistance and thermal energy. Extended heat exposure accelerates the degradation of battery chemistry, reducing maximum energy capacity and overall lifespan.
The guidance follows previous recommendations regarding mobile power management. In early August, writers at technology publication BGR listed alternative methods for keeping smartphones charged without relying on high-wattage wall adapters. Among the options highlighted by BGR were charging devices through an automobile power socket or using a portable power bank.
