The autumn television lineup features high profile releases such as a new domestic adaptation of the Strugatsky brothers novel Hard to Be a God, the return of Guy Ritchie crime comedy spin off The Gentlemen, and new seasons of popular horror anthologies.
Adaptation of classic science fiction novel
A new adaptation of the cult science fiction novel Hard to Be a God by Soviet-era authors Arkady and Boris Strugatsky premieres on September 3 on the Wink streaming service. It marks the second domestic screen version following the highly stylized feature film by Russian director Aleksei German, alongside a German film adaptation released in the late 1980s. The inclusion of Russian actor Leonid Yarmolnik in the new cast serves as an explicit nod to German's film.
Directed by Dmitry Tyurin, whose previous credits include Thirst and Trigger, the series expands the medieval world of Arkanar by adding new characters and storylines. The ensemble cast features Sergey Bezrukov, Fyodor Bondarchuk, Nikita Kologrivyy, Lev Zulkarnaev, and Viktor Dobronravov. Andrey Zolotarev, known for writing Boy's Word: Blood on the Asphalt, penned the screenplay. Serbian actor Aleksandar Radojicic, who previously appeared in The Balkan Line, stars in the lead role of Don Rumata.
Crime comedy spin off and workplace sitcom
Director Guy Ritchie returns with the second season of his action crime comedy series The Gentlemen, releasing September 3 on streaming service Netflix. Ritchie directs the project and co-wrote the screenplay with Matthew Read, exploring the dangerous world of Cockney organized crime where female figures share power alongside men. The narrative follows Duke Eddie and drug lord daughter Susie Glass as they expand their criminal empire across continental Europe. Starring actors Theo James and Kaya Scodelario return to their roles, accompanied by veteran screen actors Ray Winstone and Vinnie Jones.
Workplace sitcom The Paper arrives for its second season on September 9 on Peacock. Created as a spiritual successor and spin off of Greg Daniels' celebrated comedy series The Office, the show centers on the daily operations of print journalism. Action series Neagley debuts September 16 on Amazon Prime Video as a dedicated spin off expanding the Jack Reacher television universe. Developed by screenwriters Nick Santora, writer on The Sopranos, and Nicholas Wootton, writer on Prison Break, the series focuses on private investigator Frances Neagley, the trusted right hand of Reacher. In her standalone story, Neagley investigates the mysterious death of a close personal friend from her past. British espionage drama Slow Horses returns for its sixth season on September 16 on Apple TV+. Based on two novels by author Mick Herron from his Slough House spy book series, the upcoming season presents a packed storyline. The plot centers on the demoted MI6 agents known as slow horses, led by Jackson Lamb, who are forced to go on the run after senior official Diana Taverner entangles the department in a dangerous scheme. The main ensemble cast returns, including Gary Oldman, Jack Lowden, Kristin Scott Thomas, Saskia Reeves, and Rosalind Eleazar.
True crime anthology and midlife comedy
True crime anthology Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story releases its fourth season on September 17 on Netflix. Showrun by Ian Brennan, co-creator of Glee, the season examines one of the most famous unsolved murder cases from late 19th-century Massachusetts. The story focuses on the brutal axe murder of a married couple, where police identified the man's daughter as the primary suspect. The series aims to reconstruct the historical timeline of events. Comedy series Youth debuts September 20 on streaming platform HBO Max. Irish actress Sharon Horgan, known for creating and starring in Bad Sisters, created the project and plays the lead role. Paternal mystery comedy and horror return
Comedy series Brothers debuts September 23 on Apple TV+, starring Hollywood actors Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as fictionalized versions of themselves residing on a shared ranch. The project stems from a 2023 discovery by the long-time friends and former True Detective co-stars that they might be paternal half-brothers. Although the actors opted against undergoing DNA testing to verify the claim, notable given that Harrelson's father was a hitman who once claimed credit for the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, producers crafted the narrative around their real-life bond. The show is executive produced by Schitt's Creek producer David West Read and showrunner Lee Eisenberg of The Office.
Horror anthology series American Horror Story returns for its 13th season on September 24 on FX and Hulu. Series creator Ryan Murphy designed the installment for long-time viewers by bringing back characters from prominent earlier seasons, including Murder House, Asylum, Coven, Freak Show, and Cult, to face a central threat described as the greatest absolute evil. Documentary series JAY-Z in Infinity premieres June 27 on HBO Max, directed and produced by music executive Rick Rubin. Filmed across two days in Paris, the eight-part interview project features Rubin in conversation with rapper Shawn Carter, commercially known as JAY-Z. The series explores Carter's creative process and life history, timed to commemorate the 30th anniversary of his debut studio album Reasonable Doubt.
