California startup Satyress has presented Threehalves, a two-meter-tall centaur robot designed to intervene in forest fires and landslide areas.

The machine combines a humanoid torso with a quadrupedal locomotion base, featuring a horned head and glowing eyes that have generated fascination on social media. Company founder Beau G. conceived the automaton to take on physical risks in high-impact disaster zones, keeping human workers out of lethal environments.

The horns add height to prevent the machine from easily passing through standard doorways, requiring operators to deliberately lower it when moving indoors. According to specialized portal Interesting Engineering, this design choice aims to make clear that the device is a heavy industrial tool rather than a domestic security guard.

Interchangeable tools and remote control

Threehalves relies on direct human operation rather than full autonomy. A pilot controls the robot from a safe distance using a remote interface, guided by high-resolution cameras built into its illuminated eyes.

Instead of traditional fixed arms, the machine features a modular limb architecture. Emergency crews can swap heavy tools on site in minutes, fitting the robot with rotating chainsaws or percussion drills to match disaster conditions.

The four-legged base provides complete stability on steep terrain. This design overcomes the balance limitations found in conventional bipedal machines during complex field operations.

Emergency braking and safety protocols

Satyress built multiple safety systems into the robot, based on a company philosophy that no job task justifies losing a human life. The primary operator can freeze any action in progress with a hand gesture in front of the sensors.

As a last resort if electronic systems fail, the emergency protocol requires puncturing a pressurized air tank located on the chest or back of the robot. This action triggers pneumatic brakes that physically lock all joints, instantly immobilizing the machine.

The company has invested more than $150,000 in developing the prototype. Satyress has not yet announced an official launch date for the robot.
