Samsung smartphone cameras are automatically reducing photograph resolution during shooting without notifying users, technology news website Android Authority reported. A user on Samsung's official community forum in South Korea identified the change after taking photos on the flagship Galaxy Z Fold 8 handset.

The forum user discovered that attempting to capture an image at a manually selected 24-megapixel resolution setting produced a file saved at only 12 megapixels. When asked about the discrepancy, Samsung customer support representatives stated that the camera behavior is completely normal.

Engineers at the South Korean technology giant explained that company handsets may lower image resolution automatically even when a user has manually chosen higher settings. Samsung stated that the system overrides user choices to ensure device safety and maintain processing performance.

According to company engineers, the camera software drops image resolution when the smartphone overheats or during low-light shooting. The automated reduction also activates when using the camera flash, taking close-up macro shots, or operating in specific camera modes.

Camera resolution settings on Galaxy devices

Android Authority examined further customer feedback and found that owners of at least one other flagship model, the Galaxy S26 Ultra, have reported matching resolution drops. The issue appears across multiple premium Samsung devices running the company's Android camera application software.

Samsung Electronics, headquartered in Suwon, South Korea, is the world's largest manufacturer of Android smartphones. Smartphone megapixel ratings dictate the pixel resolution of captured images, with higher pixel counts offering finer visual detail at the cost of heavier processor loads and higher thermal output. Modern mobile camera sensors frequently employ pixel binning, combining data from adjacent pixels to boost brightness and reduce image noise in dark environments.

Durability testing on Galaxy Z Fold 8

The resolution findings follow recent hardware durability tests conducted on the newly released Galaxy Z Fold 8. In early August, prominent technology reviewer JerryRigEverything tested the foldable handset by subjecting it to extreme physical stress tests.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 successfully survived the channel's severe bend test without structural failure. However, testing showed that the folding inner display and outer casing suffered heavy scratching during scratch resistance evaluations.

JerryRigEverything, operated by tech reviewer Zack Nelson, tests consumer mobile hardware for structural integrity, scratch resistance, and display durability. Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold lineup features flexible glass displays that allow the device to open like a book, making thermal management and component protection critical during intensive processing tasks such as photograph capture.
