South Korean technology giant Samsung is preparing to increase the battery capacity of its flagship Galaxy S27 Ultra smartphone for the first time since 2020.
According to a leak from the database of Chinese regulatory body 3C, the upcoming Galaxy S27 Ultra will feature a battery with a rated capacity of 5,534 mAh, which corresponds to a typical capacity of 5,700 mAh. That figure represents an increase of nearly 15 percent compared to the battery inside the Galaxy S26 Ultra.
The 3C rating, short for China Compulsory Certificate, is a mandatory regulatory safety approval for electronic products sold in China, and database entries from the agency regularly expose technical specifications ahead of official launches. In mobile device engineering, rated capacity defines the guaranteed minimum charge, whereas typical capacity describes the average energy storage recorded across production batches.
Seven-generation battery freeze
The planned hardware update marks a significant shift for Samsung, which held its flagship Ultra battery capacity at 5,000 mAh across seven consecutive product generations, from the Galaxy S20 Ultra through to the Galaxy S26 Ultra.
While Samsung relied on processor energy efficiency to manage power consumption, rival Chinese smartphone manufacturers aggressively adopted silicon-carbon battery technology. Competitors in China have introduced flagship handsets carrying batteries between 7,000 mAh and 7,500 mAh, with some models offering up to 8,000 mAh inside slimmer physical frames. Silicon-carbon anodes replace traditional graphite to deliver higher energy density without increasing physical dimensions.
Galaxy S27 Pro details and charging speed
The 3C certification filing also exposed specifications for another upcoming handset model, the Galaxy S27 Pro. The device is listed with a 5,200 mAh battery capacity and is expected to launch as a more compact alternative to the Ultra edition without support for Samsung's S Pen stylus.
Both the Galaxy S27 Ultra and the Galaxy S27 Pro will support 60W wired fast charging, according to the regulatory database. That charging performance brings Samsung's upcoming devices into line with the charging rate offered by Apple's iPhone 18 Pro.
Expected release timeline
Official presentation of the Galaxy S27 series is expected in early 2027, with an official announcement likely scheduled for February. The regulatory appearance follows previous online leaks showing an updated exterior design for the Galaxy S27 Ultra.
