Riot police in Salford have arrested a 37-year-old wanted man after pulling him off a back porch roof at the end of a two-day stand-off.

Officers used a ladder to reach the suspect as he slept on the roof of a back porch at a property in the city. A struggle ensued as police pulled the man down, causing his trousers to fall off before he tumbled on top of the officers.

Two officers suffered minor injuries during the incident. Greater Manchester Police confirmed that the 37-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing public nuisance, criminal damage, public order offences, burglary, and assaulting two police officers. He remains in police custody.

The arrest attempt was tasked to Greater Manchester Police by another force. The man was wanted on recall to prison for other matters.

Police response and community impact

Detective Chief Inspector Helen Bagnall, of the Salford district, said officers worked continuously with partner agencies to resolve the situation. "During two days of disruption to the local community, we worked continuously with our partners to bring this matter to a safe conclusion," Bagnall said.

"This was an extensive use of vital policing resources and clearly demonstrates the dangers our officers face on a daily basis in order to protect the people of Greater Manchester," she added.

Salford is a city in Greater Manchester, policed by Greater Manchester Police across its metropolitan district. A recall to prison is initiated when an offender who has been released on license breaches the conditions of their sentence or release.

Property damage and resident support

Bagnall expressed gratitude to local residents who faced disruption during the two-day standoff. "I would like to reiterate my thanks to the people of Salford for their patience and understanding whilst emergency service personnel dealt with this incident," she said.

The senior officer noted that several properties were damaged during the incident. "Some properties have been damaged as a result of this man's actions," Bagnall said. "We will work with partners to ensure affected residents will be supported going forward."
