Russian teen jailed for carrying police officer on bonnet

A 17-year-old unlicensed driver from the Vladimir Region of Russia has been sentenced to one year in a juvenile correctional colony after hitting a traffic police inspector and carrying him on the bonnet of his car for several kilometres.

The joint press service of the courts of Vladimir Region reported the judicial ruling following a trial under Part 2 of Article 318 of the Russian Criminal Code, which penalises life-threatening violence against a representative of authority.

The incident occurred in December 2025 in the Kameshkovsky District of Vladimir Oblast. According to court records, the 17-year-old was driving a VAZ-21063 automobile without a valid driver licence when he committed a traffic violation. When an inspector from the Road Patrol Service attempted to pull the vehicle over, the teenager accelerated sharply forward and struck the officer.

The police officer caught hold of the vehicle bonnet as the car continued moving. The teenager drove for several kilometres with the officer clinging to the bonnet before turning off the main road and getting stuck in an open field.

Court proceedings and defence claims

During court proceedings, the teenager refused to admit guilt for the incident. He claimed to the court that he had been trying to steer around the traffic inspector rather than hit him, asserting that the collision was accidental. However, the court rejected his explanation and convicted him under the criminal statute.

Under the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, Article 318 covers offences involving violence against public officials performing their official duties. Part 2 of the statute specifically addresses acts of violence that pose a danger to the life or health of an official. Sentences for underage offenders convicted under this law are served in educational colonies, which are specialized juvenile reformatories for individuals aged 14 to 18.

Regional background and vehicle details

Kameshkovsky District is an administrative district located in the northern part of the Vladimir Region, an oblast situated in western Russia to the east of Moscow. The district seat is the town of Kameshkovo, and the surrounding rural territory consists of secondary roads and farmland.

The Road Patrol Service, abbreviated locally as DPS, operates under the Main Directorate for Traffic Safety of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, carrying out traffic law enforcement and highway patrols across the nation.

The vehicle involved in the pursuit, a VAZ-21063, is a variant of the classic rear-wheel-drive Lada saloon model manufactured by Soviet and Russian automaker AvtoVAZ. In Russia, individuals must be at least 18 years of age to legally obtain a driver licence for passenger cars.
