A Russian police officer fatally shot a poacher on the morning of August 15 during a law enforcement operation near the village of Sobolevo on the Kamchatka Peninsula.
The regional department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia reported that the officer accidentally discharged his firearm after losing his footing on wet stones while detaining suspects along the Srednyaya Vorovskaya River.
According to regional police authorities speaking to Lenta.ru, officers were carrying out a joint anti-poaching patrol alongside representatives from the regional fishery agency when they discovered an illegal fishing camp by the riverbank.
Confrontation along the riverbank
As the patrol team approached the site to inspect the camp, a dog suddenly ran out at the officers. One of the police officers drew his handgun and fired a warning shot into the air to keep the animal away.
Law enforcement officers then moved in to apprehend the group of poachers gathered along the shore. During the subsequent struggle and arrests, the police officer slipped on wet rocks and fired multiple rounds toward the suspects.
One of the bullets struck a poacher, inflicting a fatal wound. Authorities confirmed that the individual died as a result of the gunshot.
