Russian mother detained over death of three-month-old son

An 18-year-old woman in Uzhur, Krasnoyarsk Krai, has been detained after suffocating her three-month-old son because he was crying, Russian investigators said.

The regional department of the Investigative Committee of Russia told Lenta.ru about the incident and released footage of the suspect's interrogation. On camera, the woman admitted guilt and explained that she had squeezed the infant's neck tightly. The video also showed the interior of the apartment where the crime occurred.

Investigative Committee findings

Investigators said the mother lived with her son at her parents' apartment on Zheleznodorozhnaya Street in Uzhur. On the morning of August 5, she was left home alone when her relatives went to work. When the baby began crying, she grabbed him by the neck and used excessive force, according to authorities.

A medical examination determined that the child died of mechanical asphyxiation. Law enforcement officers opened a criminal case, detained the mother, and are deciding whether to formally arrest her. The suspect has also been ordered to undergo a forensic psychiatric evaluation.

The report follows a previous incident in Moscow where a woman gave birth in an apartment and threw her newborn son into a toilet. That infant survived, and authorities opened a criminal investigation against the mother.
