Royal Mint releases Star Trek coins for 60th anniversary

The Royal Mint has released a collection of commemorative coins to mark the 60th anniversary of the cult television series Star Trek.

The two coin collection features iconic imagery from the science fiction franchise, which first debuted on American television in 1966. According to the website of the Royal Mint, the official coin maker of the United Kingdom created the series to celebrate six decades of the global pop culture phenomenon.

The first coin in the set has a face value of 50 pence and is struck from a cupronickel alloy of copper and nickel. Its reverse side depicts the famous Vulcan salute hand gesture alongside the iconic phrase "Live Long and Prosper". Standard editions of the 50p coin are priced at 19.95 British pounds, which is approximately 1,186 Ukrainian hryvnias.

A second coin in the collection, scheduled to become available for purchase in November 2026, is dedicated to the franchise's legendary starships. The design depicts four generations of Star Trek space vessels alongside the inscription "Star Trek 60".

Prices and precious metal editions

Alongside the standard releases, collector options are available across several price tiers. Coloured versions of both coins are priced at 29.95 pounds each, which is around 1,781 hryvnias.

The Royal Mint is also offering limited collectible versions struck in precious metals for coin enthusiasts. A fine silver coin in the series costs 99.50 pounds, or roughly 5,917 hryvnias. The top of the range feature is a solid gold coin priced at 2,495 pounds, which equals approximately 148,387 hryvnias.

Recent pop culture coin releases

The Star Trek collection is part of an ongoing trend of entertainment and themed coin issues by official minting institutions. In July, the Royal Mint released two 50p commemorative coins featuring an "Ice and Fire" design to mark the 15th anniversary of the hit fantasy drama Game of Thrones.

Central banks have also released themed collectible currency. In September, the National Bank of Ukraine launched a commemorative coin set titled "Inhabitants of the Deep Sea", which honoured unusual marine life with coins dedicated to the Azov Sea mud shrimp and the Black Sea scallop.
