Russians have been advised to exercise caution when using public USB charging ports in venues such as airports, train stations, cafes, and shopping centers due to potential cybersecurity risks including malware infection and data theft.

Speaking to news outlet RT, Igor Kotilevets, a senior lecturer in the Department of Digital Technologies of Data Processing at RTU MIREA's Institute of Cybersecurity and Digital Technologies, explained that technically such attacks are possible because USB ports transmit both electricity and data.

Kotilevets noted that if a port or cable is modified, it could theoretically copy files or install malicious software without the user's knowledge. However, he emphasized that in practice such attacks are almost impossible to carry out because modifying a charging station or cable is difficult to implement.

In cybersecurity, attacks leveraging compromised charging stations are often referred to as juice jacking. Standard USB cables feature multi-pin connections that carry electrical power for battery charging and data lines for file transfer within a single physical connector.

Protecting devices from public USB risks

Modern smartphone operating systems provide built-in safeguards against unauthorized data connections. Kotilevets recalled that modern smartphones automatically prompt users for permission when connected to a new USB device, asking to authorize data access before any file transfer occurs.

If a user does not select options such as trust or allow on their screen, no data exchange takes place. Despite these automatic protections, Kotilevets advised that basic safety precautions remain worthwhile.

He recommended that travelers use standard wall outlets with their own charging blocks and cables whenever possible. When connecting to a public charger is unavoidable, Kotilevets suggested selecting charge only mode on the device.

University background and Android performance tips

RTU MIREA, located in Moscow, is a major public research university specializing in information technology, cybersecurity, and radio engineering. Its Institute of Cybersecurity and Digital Technologies conducts research into data protection and hardware vulnerability prevention.

The charging advisory follows earlier reports on Android operating system performance settings. Manipulating specific options within Android developer mode allows users to speed up interface animations, making the smartphone operate noticeably faster.
