PT warns of street protests if Lula victory is denied

The Workers' Party will mobilize supporters across Brazil if the presidential election victory of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is not recognized, party national president Edinho Silva said on Monday night.

Speaking to CNN Brasil on 26 October, Silva said it was unacceptable for defeated presidential candidate Senator Flávio Bolsonaro to refuse to accept the outcome of the vote.

Silva announced that the party has summoned its national executive committee to meet on Thursday to evaluate the situation. He said party leadership will use the Thursday meeting to establish a nationwide mobilization plan to put people on the streets if Brazilian democracy and the election of Lula are not respected.

The Workers' Party, known in Brazil as the PT, is the country's governing left-wing political movement. Lula, a former trade union leader who governed Brazil from 2003 to 2010 before returning to the presidency in 2023, defeated Flávio Bolsonaro in the second-round runoff to secure another term in office.

Allegations of United States election interference

During the interview, Silva accused Flávio Bolsonaro of acting irresponsibly with the backing of United States President Donald Trump. Silva claimed that Trump had previously attempted to intervene in the Brazilian election through major technology companies.

According to Silva, the Workers' Party reported digital campaign interference that was subsequently recognized by the United Nations. He said technology company Meta had acknowledged making errors in boosting political advertisements during the process, and he questioned whether Brazil is now facing international interference in the final election result.

The accusations follow earlier disclosures from Brazilian law enforcement. As reported by CNN, Federal Police director-general Andrei Rodrigues said in early October that investigators had opened an inquiry into potential interference by the United States in the Brazilian elections.

Lula expressed concern regarding potential foreign meddling multiple times during his campaign speeches. The Brazilian president previously said he spoke directly with Trump, who assured him that the United States would not intervene in the election.

Donald Trump statements on the vote

Trump commented on the Brazilian election earlier on Monday, claiming without offering evidence that the voting looked like another rigged election. Despite that claim, the American leader said he likes Lula and gets along well with him.

On Sunday, Trump said he was monitoring the Brazilian election, though he did not declare support for either candidate. After the first round, when Flávio Bolsonaro finished ahead of Lula, Trump praised the conservative candidate's performance.

Speaking to journalists outside the White House, Trump described Flávio Bolsonaro's first-round showing as a great victory, calling it close, very big, and incredible.

Flávio Bolsonaro annulment threat

The post-election tension escalated on Sunday when Flávio Bolsonaro gave a speech following his defeat, saying he would seek the annulment of the election that gave victory to Lula. The senator said it was impossible to recognize the outcome in the context of what had taken place.

During that speech, Flávio Bolsonaro accused Supreme Federal Court Justice Cristiano Zanin of interference in the electoral process. The candidate objected to an order issued by Zanin extending voting hours across the entire national territory following an official request from Lula's campaign.

The Supreme Federal Court, known as the STF, is Brazil's highest judicial body and handles constitutional and electoral disputes. Zanin was appointed to the court by Lula in 2023.

By Monday, the push to cancel the results was dropped. Members of Flávio Bolsonaro's campaign told CNN that the candidate had abandoned the effort and would not file a request to annul the vote. Campaign officials said their strategy will instead focus on contesting alleged abuses of state resources during the campaign, without questioning the validity of the votes.

Recognition of the election result

Later on Monday, Liberal Party president Valdemar Costa Neto announced that the party officially recognizes the election outcome. Costa Neto stated that questions regarding the second round must be properly clarified within a balanced and democratic political debate.

The Liberal Party, known as the PL, is Brazil's main right-wing party and the primary opposition bloc to Lula's administration in Congress. With the PL leadership accepting the vote and the challenge to ballot validity withdrawn, the political focus turns to Thursday, when the Workers' Party leadership convenes to assess the post-election landscape.
