The Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) formally nominated President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for reelection on Sunday at a party convention in the northern zone of São Paulo. It is the seventh time Lula has run for the presidency.
Lula's coalition for a fourth term includes the PT/PV/PCdoB federation, the PSB, the PDT and the PSOL/Rede federation. Major polls show him leading first-round voting intentions, followed by senator Flávio Bolsonaro of the PL.
Who attended the convention
The event was expected to draw key coalition figures, including vice-presidential candidate Geraldo Alckmin, former finance minister and São Paulo gubernatorial candidate Fernando Haddad, along with ministers, lawmakers and longtime allies of Lula.
Lula's political history
A former union leader, Lula helped found the PT in 1980 and was elected a federal deputy in 1986. He first ran for president in 1989, losing the runoff to Fernando Collor de Mello. He was elected president in 2002 and reelected in 2006. His candidacy was rejected by Brazil's top electoral court in 2018 under the Clean Record Law, and he won a third term in 2022 against Jair Bolsonaro.
