PrivatBank raised its foreign exchange rates in Ukraine on Tuesday, August 18, pushing both the US dollar and euro higher for cash and card transactions. The state-owned bank increased its dollar exchange rate by 9 kopecks to 44.99 hryvnias per dollar.

The lender also increased its euro rate by 5 kopecks, bringing it to 52.15 hryvnias per euro. Customers selling foreign currency to the bank received a buying rate of 44.39 hryvnias for the dollar and 51.15 hryvnias for the euro.

Rates for card payments saw sharper increases during Tuesday trading. PrivatBank raised its dollar card exchange rate by 21 kopecks to 45.05 hryvnias, while the euro rate for card transactions grew by 28 kopecks to 52.36 hryvnias.

Official central bank rates

The National Bank of Ukraine set the official reference rate for August 18 at 44.69 hryvnias per dollar. That represented a slight gain for the Ukrainian currency, which strengthened by 2 kopecks against the greenback compared with the previous figure.

Against the euro, however, the hryvnia weakened. The central bank set the official European currency rate at 51.81 hryvnias per euro, marking a drop of 10 kopecks for the local currency.

Commercial bank averages

Across Ukrainian commercial banks, foreign currency prices also drifted upward on Tuesday. The average bank selling rate for the US dollar increased by 3 kopecks to reach 45.03 hryvnias per dollar, with banks offering an average buying rate of 44.55 hryvnias per dollar from customers.

The average commercial rate for the euro rose by 13 kopecks to 52.18 hryvnias per euro. Banks across the country were purchasing euros from the public at an average rate of 51.54 hryvnias per euro.
