A prison psychiatrist using the Reddit username TryingmybestQT has detailed an encounter with his most turbulent inmate, who severely bit his arm. The former healthcare worker explained that the prisoner inflicted the injuries on himself inside the facility.
Writing in an online discussion, the practitioner recalled that while he witnessed many unsettling incidents during his prison tenure, one particular patient stood out. The inmate bit his arm with such force that the limb was entirely covered in blood.

The confrontation began while the prisoner was housed in an accessible cell designed for individuals with disabilities. According to the psychiatrist, the man was desperate to move into a larger room and grew increasingly agitated because staff members had not yet approved his relocation request.
The psychiatrist noted that the sudden self-harm occurred at the exact moment medical staff were preparing to grant his request. Just as the clinician was about to give a positive response and approve the move, the inmate began biting into his own flesh.
Medical intervention and psychiatric observation
Staff immediately intervened and placed the prisoner under round-the-clock individual observation to prevent further injury. A dedicated psychiatric team worked closely with the man to stabilise his emotional state until he regained his composure.
The doctors successfully resolved the crisis without resorting to serious medication or heavy pharmaceutical therapy. The psychiatrist stated that understanding the inmate's underlying motive helped the medical staff manage the case, noting that the man was frustrated and acted out solely to provoke a reaction and create a scene.
Mental health protocols in correctional facilities
Prison psychiatry is a specialised branch of healthcare that operates under strict institutional security rules. Medical professionals working in correctional facilities regularly manage acute behavioural crises, navigating the tension between clinical patient care and prison safety mandates.
When an incarcerated individual engages in self-harm, standard correctional procedures typically require continuous one-on-one monitoring to prevent life-threatening injuries. Clinicians frequently evaluate whether an incident arises from severe psychiatric distress or instrumental behaviour, where a person harms themselves to influence administrative decisions such as cell transfers or housing reassignments.
The account was reported by editor Oleg Davydov for the Russian outlet's internet and media section. The publication previously covered comments from an American prison guard, who spoke publicly about the category of inmates he found most challenging to supervise and noted that he could not stand them.
Reddit functions as a global discussion platform where millions of users participate in specialised forums to discuss their professions and personal histories. Healthcare workers and correctional staff often post under anonymous handles to recount challenging experiences from secure working environments.
