Pedro Sánchez Visits Yebes Observatory for Solar Eclipse

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez will visit Yebes Astronomical Observatory during the solar eclipse amid European criticism over migration policy.

Pedro Sánchez Visits Yebes Observatory for Solar Eclipse

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez will pause his summer break in Lanzarote to visit the Yebes Astronomical Observatory in Guadalajara for a privileged view of today's solar eclipse. Millions of people across Spain are expected to watch the celestial event around 20:30 hours. Media outlets and health guidance have urged viewers to use proper eye protection to avoid vision injuries.

The visit to Guadalajara represents the single interruption of what critics describe as an informative eclipse by Sánchez since he moved to La Mareta following a brief trip to Ceuta. During his stay in Lanzarote, Sánchez has focused on diving and recommending songs and books. His public silence comes as Spain faces fallout from a major influx of undocumented migrants into Ceuta.

Joint Letter From European Leaders

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen released a joint letter on social networks representing 22 European Union member states. Meloni and Frederiksen noted that they are the only two female leaders heading governments among the 27 EU nations. Although they hold notable political differences, both leaders expressed a shared conviction on the urgent need for strict policies against illegal immigration.

In their letter, the two leaders proposed the creation of deportation centers located outside the European Union. They stated that illegal immigration produces clear negative effects on European societies, specifically pointing to rising crime rates and increased pressure on public services. They also affirmed their pride in Europe's Christian cultural heritage, asserting that new arrivals must respect host values rather than imposing their own.

Criticism of Spanish Migration Policies

The joint letter linked the ongoing migration situation across Europe to a pull effect caused by a mass regularization of undocumented migrants conducted by the Sánchez administration. Writer Jorge Fernández Díaz observed that Sánchez has targeted Meloni as his main political antagonist to contrast her views with his own progressive stance. However, Frederiksen is a social democrat rather than a far right politician, placing her in the same political family as Sánchez.

Fernández Díaz stated that Sánchez remains a rare exception among European leaders in advocating an open door migration approach. The columnist noted that this policy aligns with initiatives promoted by George Soros through the funded organization Open Arms. Sánchez is expected to return to his summer retreat after observing the solar eclipse in Guadalajara.
