The fifth and final season of Outer Banks premieres on Netflix on Thursday, August 20, 2026, with several main characters permanently absent from the cast following dramatic plot developments in the previous season. The upcoming episodes will see the core group of Pogues attempting to rebuild their lives after the tragic death of JJ Maybank, played by Rudy Pankow, during events set in Morocco.
In the new season, surviving Pogues John B (Chase Stokes), Sarah (Madelyn Cline), Kiara (Madison Bailey), Pope (Jonathan Daviss), and Cleo (Carlacia Grant) must navigate multiple threats while seeking revenge against villain Chandler Groff, portrayed by J. Anthony Crane, and attempting to recover the Blue Crown artifact.
Created by Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke, Outer Banks is an action-adventure mystery drama series on Netflix that follows the conflict between the working-class Pogues and the wealthy Kooks. In the fifth season, the Kooks actively work to ensure the Pogues have no home to return to, forcing the group to rely on their wits and form an unstable alliance with former adversary Rafe, played by Drew Starkey.
The group also faces danger from Dalia, played by Pollyanna McIntosh, and the Corsairs, who are closing in on the team. Driven by grief, Kiara is willing to do whatever it takes to secure justice for the most important person in her life, pushing her friends to take extreme risks throughout the final chapter.
Show creators Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke previously told Netflix publication Tudum that they were ecstatic to embark on one final journey with the Pogues. They described returning to the set with the cast for the final season as surreal and bittersweet, promising fans an incredible adventure for the series conclusion.
Characters not returning for Outer Banks Season 5
The primary character missing from the final season is JJ Maybank. The character was killed by his biological father, Chandler Groff, at the climax of the fourth season. While actor Rudy Pankow will not return as a main cast member in the final episodes, the character could potentially appear through flashback sequences.
Although Kiara references a legend stating that the Blue Crown possesses the power to resurrect the dead, the storyline does not indicate that JJ will return to life. In a 2024 statement to Tudum, Pankow expressed his sincere gratitude to the cast and crew, remarking that working on the series was a genuine pleasure, the biggest project of his career, and the start of his professional life, adding that he would deeply miss the production.
Villains and supporting figures absent from final episodes
Several other characters killed during the fourth season will also be absent from the upcoming storyline. The Corsair Lightner, portrayed by Rigo Sanchez, will not return after being shot and killed by Pope during a high-stakes chase in the city of Agapenta. Pope fired the fatal shot to protect his injured girlfriend, Cleo, as Lightner cornered them during their quest for the Blue Crown.
Captain Terrance, played by Terence Rosemore, is another figure who will not appear in the fifth season. Serving as a father figure to Cleo, Terrance died in the first half of season four after being shot in the chest by mercenary Lightner.
Two additional casualties of Chandler Groff will also be missing from the narrative. Wes Genrette, played by David Jensen, who originally hired the Pogues to hunt for Blackbeard's legendary treasure, and Hollis Robinson, played by Brianna Brown, a real-estate developer who partnered with Groff, were both murdered by the ruthless scammer before he turned on his own son.
