Oblivion Remastered Debuts on the Nintendo Switch 2

Video game publisher Bethesda Softworks and developer Virtuos have launched The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered on the Nintendo Switch 2, bringing the 2006 fantasy role-playing classic to Nintendo hardware after skipping the original Switch console.

The release marks the arrival of the updated title on Nintendo's hybrid device following its earlier launches on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series consoles, and PC.

The remaster preserves the core narrative and adventure set in the imperial province of Cyrodiil while rebuilding much of its presentation in Unreal Engine 5. Bethesda and Virtuos retained the systems and framework of the original two-decade-old release, updating character models, lighting, and environmental assets to reflect modern visual standards.

In a review published on Monday, games journalist Ruben Lopez reported that while the core role-playing experience remains strong, performance on the hybrid platform comes with noticeable visual and framerate compromises.

Gameplay updates and Switch 2 features

The remaster overhaul modifies the map, interface, and character progression system. Combat mechanics feature heavier animations and more impactful feedback when landing physical strikes with melee weapons.

Bethesda smoothed out mechanical rough edges from the original title by adopting design elements from its successor, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. The underlying character progression system retains its original scope, allowing players to tailor abilities toward melee fighting, stealth, magic, or hybrid combinations. Adventurers can specialize in physical strength to wield greatswords, focus on archery and stealth, or master offensive and defensive schools of magic.

The Nintendo Switch 2 release introduces console-specific control features, including Joy-Con mouse support designed for aiming bows and navigating menus. The title also incorporates gyroscopic motion controls and touchscreen functionality. Lopez noted that while switching into mouse mode is not automatic, the option provides enhanced precision during ranged combat and menu interaction.

Visual resolution and handheld performance

Visual rendering on the hybrid system utilizes Nvidia Deep Learning Super Sampling image reconstruction across both docked and handheld play modes. In docked mode, the console delivers a 1080p output reconstructed from an internal resolution of 960x540 pixels.

In handheld mode, target output drops to 900p reconstructed from an internal base resolution of 800x450 pixels. Image reconstruction functions effectively in interior locations and enclosed cities where objects remain close to the player camera.

Open-world environments present greater visual compromises. Trees and high-frequency visual details show flickering in wide areas, while foliage density and long-distance detail are reduced compared to desktop and stationary console versions.

Performance targets 30 frames per second, though the frame rate remains inconsistent during exploration. Lopez noted frame pacing issues, micro-stutters in open-world movement, and frame drops when traversing large environments or fighting multiple enemies. Handheld performance holds steady over extended sessions without noticeable degradation after an hour of continuous play.

Expansions, total playtime, and pricing

The Switch 2 version includes all original downloadable content alongside the major expansions Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles. The Shivering Isles expansion introduces a distinct realm ruled by the Daedric Prince Sheogorath, providing approximately 40 hours of additional gameplay.

Completing the main story campaign requires dozens of hours, while full exploration of faction quests, the Imperial City Arena, dungeons, and expansion content ranges from 20 to over 100 hours.

The physical edition of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered for Nintendo Switch 2 is priced at 64.99 euros, while the digital download version on the Nintendo eShop costs 54.99 euros.

Soundtrack and final review verdict

The remaster includes the original soundtrack composed by Jeremy Soule, which remains intact. Lopez highlighted the soundtrack as a key element that maintains the classical atmosphere of the game alongside its updated visual presentation.

In his final evaluation, Lopez awarded The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered a score of 80 out of 100. He concluded that while framerate instability prevents it from being the definitive edition, the release remains a highly attractive option for players seeking portable access to the open-world RPG.
