An office worker in Norway discovered a collection of high-value computer hardware inside an electronic waste dumpster at his workplace basement and was granted permission by his manager to keep the entire find.
The employee, who shared the discovery on the discussion platform Reddit under the username Traditional_Total_27, recovered 12 RAM modules including sealed 32 GB units alongside five computer processors from the basement bin of a new office building.
Discovery in the basement dumpster
The worker explained in an online post that he was visiting the basement level of the new building when he spotted a batch of discarded computer components inside a container designated for electronic recycling. Surprised to see intact hardware in the trash, he asked his supervisor if he could take the items, and his manager told him he could keep them.
After receiving permission, the worker inspected the disposal bin more closely and uncovered a significantly more valuable assortment than was initially visible. A photo posted alongside his report showed 12 individual RAM sticks and five central processing units, including four high-end AMD Ryzen 9 5950X processors.
Component testing and market conditions

Upon taking the components home, the worker tested the hardware and confirmed that all the items were working normally. He noted that he had purchased a power supply unit and additional accessories to set up and verify the equipment, while expressing confusion over why functional systems were thrown away.
The user stated that he was based in Norway and had previously heard reports of companies discarding valuable electronics, though he had not believed those claims until making the discovery himself. He added that he planned to check the workplace waste container on a daily basis, remarking that for a brief moment he had felt convinced he might even find a graphics card such as an Nvidia RTX 5080.
Hardware specifications and electronic waste
The unexpected find comes amid extended volatility across the global computer hardware market. For nearly a year, surging demand tied to artificial intelligence development has placed severe strain on memory manufacturing supplies, causing price increases across multiple computing categories.
Random-access memory, or RAM, provides short-term data storage for active applications, with 32 GB DDR4 modules representing substantial memory capacity for desktop computers and workstations. Meanwhile, the AMD Ryzen 9 5950X is a 16-core flagship desktop processor widely utilized for demanding computational workloads, video editing, and gaming. Discarding functional hardware of this tier remains unusual despite routine corporate IT equipment refreshes.
Having verified that the salvaged memory units and processors remain in full working order, the worker plans to monitor the office building's waste disposal area regularly for further discarded technology.
