PASOK president Nikos Androulakis called for a change in Greece's civil protection doctrine during a visit to fire-damaged Porto Germeno on Wednesday. He spoke following a briefing from local residents and the community president of Porto Germeno regarding wildfire destruction in the area.
Androulakis said civil protection in Greece must adopt a new doctrine so that readiness does not remain words and prevention does not stay on paper. He stated that PASOK does not fight rearguard battles over biblical disasters, but stressed that reasonable questions must be addressed.
He asked whether state money spent on forest clearing had been effective, whether the AEGIS program was properly used, and if municipal authorities have necessary resources. He also questioned whether critical civil protection projects were removed from the Recovery Fund.
Wildfire Damage and Relief Demands
Referring to the impact of the fires, Androulakis noted that a green lung was lost alongside properties, homes, and human lives. He urged the state to provide immediate support through initial aid payments and full compensation.
According to data from the European Copernicus mechanism, about 102,000 stremmata burned in the Porto Germeno area by Monday, along with another 30,900 stremmata in Xironomi, Boeotia. Authorities ordered evacuations for several settlements, including Porto Germeno, Agios Nektarios, Psatha, Patima, and Mytikas.
Estimates indicate that more than 100 homes were destroyed in the fires. Two crew members of one of two helicopters that collided in mid-air were also killed during the disaster response.
