French sovereignist politician Nicolas Dupont-Aignan has declared his candidacy for the 2027 presidential election and called for an immediate end to French financial aid for Ukraine. The political leader officially launched his campaign on Saturday before outlining his domestic and foreign policy platform during a television appearance on Sunday, September 20.
Speaking on the political broadcast Objectif 2027 on French news channel LCI, produced in partnership with national daily newspaper Le Parisien, Dupont-Aignan advocated for withdrawing France from the European Union. He argued that French citizens were suffering under current bloc policies and urged a complete redirection toward national sovereignty and peace.
Opposition to EU policies and Ukraine funding
During the television interview, the candidate sharply criticized European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, alleging that her administration in Brussels was advancing measures detrimental to French interests. He claimed that upcoming European Union initiatives included a new carbon tax, the future accession of Ukraine and Balkan nations, expanded digital surveillance, shared nuclear deterrence, and the eventual sending of young French people as cannon fodder to Ukraine.
Dupont-Aignan also rejected the geopolitical assessment presented by French President Emmanuel Macron regarding ongoing global tensions. The sovereignist candidate asserted that France was not facing any direct attack from either Russia or the United States. He described the international situation as a grave conflict taking place at Europe's doorstep, for which he said French taxpayers were paying a heavy price.
Sovereignist candidate for the 2027 presidential race
Nicolas Dupont-Aignan is the founder and president of Debout la France, a right-wing sovereignist political party that advocates for French national independence, reduced European integration, and strict border controls. A former deputy in the National Assembly, the lower house of the French Parliament, Dupont-Aignan previously ran as a candidate in the 2012, 2017, and 2022 presidential elections. France elects its head of state every five years under a two-round voting system, with the next election scheduled for 2027.
