Rosa Marisela Fernandez and Rosa Margarita Perez Melo, a daughter-in-law and mother-in-law who also work together, will present their new book "Suegra y nuera, ¿socias o rivales?" ("Mother-in-Law and Daughter-in-Law, Partners or Rivals?") on September 23 at Cuesta Libros in Santo Domingo.

The book draws on the authors' own experiences to lay out two perspectives on a relationship that is often reduced to stereotypes but rarely examined through the voices of the women living it, according to the authors.
In its pages, Fernandez and Perez Melo discuss cohabitation, generational differences, communication, boundaries, faith and respect, along with the lessons that have allowed them to build a relationship that works both at home and at work.
Family Ties and a Shared Workplace
The project stands out because the two women do not simply describe how they learned to live together as mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. They also work together, and the book addresses the differences of opinion, leadership styles and ways of understanding situations that come with that arrangement.
That shared experience turns the book into a reflection that can extend beyond family life, the authors say, resonating with anyone who shares a business, a family company or a professional space with people from a different generation.
Rewriting the Mother-in-Law Narrative
"Suegra y nuera, ¿socias o rivales?" does not present an idealized relationship or claim to offer a single formula for success. Instead, the authors draw on real situations and lessons to show how a relationship can change when both sides are willing to listen to each other, acknowledge their differences, set boundaries and reach agreements.
The book also sets out to challenge the traditional narrative that casts mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law as natural rivals. The authors invite readers to consider what can happen when two women united by their love for the same family choose to get to know each other beyond the roles they have been assigned, learning from one another instead.
What to Expect at the Launch
The launch event will bring together the two authors and several guests, who will share their own perspectives on the book and its contribution to family and intergenerational relationships. Writer and author mentor Ericarol Carlo will serve as master of ceremonies.
After the presentation, attendees will be able to meet Fernandez and Perez Melo and have their copies of "Suegra y nuera, ¿socias o rivales?" signed.
