A 55-year-old Mystras man who kept his 90-year-old father in a freezer for two and a half years claims grief, not money, drove his actions. Speaking in detail for the first time, he admitted his behavior was wrong and said that day by day he realizes the extent of his mistake.
The man said he collapsed psychologically following his father's death because he could not accept the loss. He said he had a close relationship with his parents and loved them pathologically. He added that he should have given his father a proper burial, as he had previously done for his mother, but he had no other close person left in his life.
His statement contradicts information reported during the initial days of the case, when he allegedly admitted keeping the body to continue collecting his father's pension. The claim that money was not a factor represents the current position of the man and his legal defense, rather than a legally established conclusion.
Legal defense and medical treatment
Defense lawyer Agis Kokkoros said his client was taking medication before the case came to light. Speaking to MEGA television, Kokkoros said medical reports and prescriptions confirm that the man had sought and received pharmaceutical assistance. The lawyer added that this support may have been insufficient and said his client will seek further medical help.
The 55-year-old has already appeared before court regarding specific aspects of the case and was released. Kokkoros clarified that an 11-month suspended prison sentence handed to his client related strictly to making false statements to authorities, not to the act of storing the body in the freezer.
Search for missing father
Family members and acquaintances searched for the elderly man for a long period before his body was discovered. During that time, the 55-year-old offered conflicting explanations about his father's location. He told some people his father was living in Athens and told others he was in a nursing home.
The investigation gained momentum after the man's sister informed police that she had not seen her father for years. Authorities subsequently searched the premises where the 55-year-old lived and located the 90-year-old man's body inside a commercial freezer.
