The documentary program Migrantes received recognition from the Association of Japanese Descendants of Dajabón during the Dajapón Fest 2026 cultural festival in Dajabón. The Nikkei community honored the project for its work in sharing the history and contributions of Japanese immigration in the Dominican Republic. The award was presented during the second edition of the festival, which marked 70 years since the establishment of the first Japanese colony in Dajabón.

The association presented plaques to journalist, presenter, and co-producer Millizen Uribe, as well as creator and general producer Gelen Gil. Omar Mukai, president of the Association of Japanese Descendants of Dajabón, and Kathia Sarit de Mukai, president of the Dajabón Tourism Cluster, handed over the awards.
According to event organizers, the distinction highlights the efforts of both communicators to preserve and spread the legacy of the Japanese community in the country. They noted that the program helped make visible the community's historical memory and its contributions to national development.
Documentary Coverage and Producer Statements
During its first season, Migrantes dedicated an episode to documenting the arrival of Japanese immigrants to the Dominican Republic. The episode focused on families that settled in Dajabón and detailed their contributions to agriculture, sports, and the Jardín Botánico Nacional.
Upon receiving the distinction, Millizen Uribe stated that the recognition serves as an incentive to continue producing journalism focused on rescuing the historical memory of migrant communities. She added that the award reaffirms their belief that stories told with respect, rigor, and sensitivity build memory, and she thanked the community for trusting them to narrate part of its legacy.
For her part, Gelen Gil stated that it is an honor for Migrantes to be part of the history of the Japanese community in the Dominican Republic.
Festival Celebrations and Notable Guests
Dajapón Fest 2026 took place on August 1 and August 2 at the Parque de la Colonia Japonesa de La Vigía in Dajabón. The event brought together cultural, culinary, and artistic activities to mark the 70th anniversary of the first Japanese colony in the province and highlight Nikkei community heritage.
Former President Hipólito Mejía, Ambassador of Japan to the Dominican Republic Hayakawa Osamu, and Minister of Culture Roberto Ángel Salcedo attended the festival inauguration. Local authorities and representatives of the Japanese community also participated in the opening ceremony.
