Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg published an opinion piece on August 10 proposing a decentralized model for artificial intelligence that would place personal digital agents in the hands of billions of people. Zuckerberg stated that superintelligence should not exist as a central system making decisions for everyone, but as an individualized tool tailored to each user.

Under his vision, individual users would possess a personal agent that understands their specific needs, goals, and preferences. These agents would assist individuals across health, work, finances, personal relationships, and everyday responsibilities.

The system would also include tools to transform ideas directly into products or businesses, alongside personal tutors operating at the level of top scientists. In addition, artificial intelligence would accelerate scientific research, drug discovery, and complex problem solving that currently requires large teams of experts over extended periods.

Zuckerberg maintained that basic access to these capabilities should be free or very cheap, with users having the option to purchase extra computing power if needed. A key element of his proposal involves running personal models locally on personal computers, mobile phones, or smart glasses.

While massive data centers and cloud infrastructure would remain necessary to train the most powerful models and process complex tasks, daily queries, chats, and decisions would not require central server processing. This local execution would allow digital tools to process personal user data on the device itself, providing enhanced privacy and giving users direct control over their systems.

Open Source Ecosystem and Regulation

Zuckerberg argued that advanced artificial intelligence should focus on boosting human capabilities and fostering innovation rather than simple task automation. He stated that the technology could create more jobs than it eliminates, while advocating that communities hosting data centers should receive direct economic benefits.

To prevent a single entity from controlling technology, Zuckerberg proposed building a robust open source ecosystem containing multiple distinct superintelligence models rather than a single dominant system. On the regulatory side, he called for close cooperation between major artificial intelligence laboratories and governments to manage cybersecurity and biological risks.

He suggested that developers provide governments with intermediate versions of powerful models before public release to allow state authorities time to prepare. He also supported strict oversight of advanced systems, export controls on advanced computer chips to competitor nations, and the preservation of American leadership in the sector, while acknowledging the risks of systems that autonomously improve themselves.

Meta Capital Expenditure and Current Capabilities

Columnist Petros Lazos noted in Capital.gr that elements of this technological transition are already taking shape. Meta AI currently executes tasks, integrates with software applications, and functions as an active collaborator rather than a standard chatbot.

Meta plans to back this strategy with investments ranging between $130 billion and $145 billion in 2026 alone. Lazos wrote that these massive capital allocations demonstrate significant corporate commitment to realizing this architectural shift.

Impact on Business Scale and Labor

Lazos highlighted that the deployment of specialized personal agents could fundamentally alter corporate structures and enterprise scale. A single professional equipped with ten specialized digital agents could handle accounting, research, marketing, programming, customer service, and management functions that currently require dozens of human employees.

As a result, a company that currently employs 50 workers could operate with five people or even a single individual. This shift could reduce traditional economies of scale, allowing small entrepreneurs with advanced personal tools to match the output of large corporations.

Lazos observed that this concept aligns with recent statements from Elon Musk, who argued that combining artificial intelligence with robotics could create such material abundance that traditional labor and money might lose their central role in society. This raises fundamental questions about how capitalism will function when human labor is no longer the primary constraint on production.

Economic Distribution and Hardware Strategy

The economic impact will depend on how productivity gains are distributed across society. If an employee using artificial intelligence produces five times more output, the resulting wealth could lead to higher wages, reduced prices for consumers, or increased profits for business owners and technology providers.

Lazos wrote that the division of these gains will determine whether superintelligence reduces or expands economic inequality. Meanwhile, Meta stands to gain a strategic advantage by establishing its technology as the primary interface for daily human activities.

Meta's smart glasses play a central role in this business model by allowing artificial intelligence to observe and process what users see and hear in real time. By integrating technology directly into wearable hardware, Meta aims to create an alternative to traditional smartphones and reduce reliance on operating platforms controlled by Apple and Google.

Lazos concluded that while Zuckerberg's vision offers economic decentralization and productivity gains, the critical challenge remains ensuring that users retain the ability to control, modify, and disconnect their artificial intelligence systems locally.
