Pop star Madonna has shared photographs of a spiritual visit to the Greek island of Patmos, where she attended church services and prayed inside.
The 68-year-old singer posted images on social media showing her dressed in a headscarf inside a local church during a three-day stay on the island. She lit candles, stood beside the cantor's desk while holding a liturgical book, and posed in front of icons depicting the Virgin Mary.
Writing on Instagram, Madonna said she was sending prayers from Patmos, describing the destination as a magical island where she felt the presence of God.
Spiritual retreat on Patmos
During her time on the island, the singer also visited the Cave of the Apocalypse. Patmos, located in the Aegean Sea, is famous as a Christian pilgrimage site where Saint John the Theologian is believed to have received the visions recorded in the New Testament Book of Revelation.
Madonna explained that her journey held personal significance because she had first visited Greece while seven months pregnant with her son, Rocco. She added that bringing him back to the country as an adult felt like a full circle moment that was good for her soul.
Corfu birthday celebrations
The trip to Patmos followed birthday celebrations on the island of Corfu, where the pop icon marked her birthday surrounded by music, dancing, and traditional Greek cuisine.
In previous social media posts, Madonna shared footage of herself dancing with a tambourine at a local mezedopoleio eatery and blowing out candles on a birthday cake aboard a boat. She captioned images from her birthday with a message telling followers to eat, pray, love, drink, dance, and break dishes.
Greek prime minister sends wishes
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis extended birthday wishes to the singer by posting a video capturing scenes from her vacation across Greece. Madonna indicated on social media that she was deeply impressed by Patmos and expressed her intention to return to the island in the near future.
