Madonna celebrates her 68th birthday in Corfu village

Madonna has celebrated her 68th birthday in the village of Kouramades on the Greek island of Corfu, choosing an outdoor table at a traditional local taverna for a festive evening of Greek music and regional food on Sunday night.

The American pop star arrived in the picturesque village alongside her 30-year-old partner Akeem Morris, several of her children, and a group of friends as part of an ongoing holiday in Greece.

She was transported to Kouramades in black vans with a security escort, prompt security measures that included closing two village roads for her arrival. Police officers were stationed throughout the village during the event.

A resident of Kouramades told Greek news outlet Protothema that locals were asked to close their house windows while the singer arrived to preserve the privacy she had requested throughout her stay in the country.

Birthday Feast and Traditional Greek Music

Her destination for the evening was Atzardo, a traditional mezedopoleio known for serving seasonal dishes and Corfiot specialities. Madonna sat in the outdoor dining area wearing a sparkling dress with a floral headband in her hair.

The celebration featured live musical performances with a distinct Greek character, including sets by Boufetzides, a folk band specializing in rebetiko and laiko styles, and the Agios Spyridon children and youth choir.

Footage from the evening showed musicians performing the well-known song O pio kalos o mathitis by legendary Greek composer Giorgos Zambetas, with guests taking part in the traditional Greek custom of breaking plates.

Cancelled Church Visit

Before sitting down for dinner, Madonna had expressed a desire to visit the village church of Panagia. The parish priest had opened the church specifically for her and was waiting inside to welcome her.

However, after large crowds gathered near the church to catch a glimpse of the singer, Madonna decided to cancel the visit and focus entirely on her birthday meal.

Helicopter Excursion to Meteora Monasteries

The birthday celebration in Corfu followed a short side trip to Meteora in central Greece on Friday, two days before her birthday. Madonna traveled from Corfu aboard two helicopters with a party of roughly 12 people, including her son.

During her three-hour stay between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., the group visited the historic Holy Monastery of Varlaam, which was opened exclusively for her visit after regular public visiting hours had ended.

While at the monastery, Madonna met with the abbot, Father Venediktos. According to a monk at the site, the singer spoke with the abbot to seek spiritual advice and asked questions about the komposkini, a traditional woollen Orthodox prayer rope, that he held in his hand.

Following her three-hour tour of the cliffside monastery complex, Madonna returned by helicopter to Corfu, where she remained for her birthday festivities.
