King Louis XIV of France may have died from gangrene caused by a rare vascular complication rather than a simple infection, according to a study in BMC Nephrology.

French newspaper Le Figaro reported that researchers identified calciphylaxis as the probable underlying condition behind the monarch's fatal illness. The disorder damaged blood vessels in the king's leg, creating conditions for a superinfection involving a fungal organism.

The findings offer a fresh explanation for the final weeks of the Sun King, who died on September 1, 1715, at the age of 76. Louis XIV had spent 72 years on the French throne and passed away just days before his 77th birthday.

Court doctors initially misdiagnosed the monarch's condition when he first complained of severe pain in his left leg several weeks prior to his death. Medical attendants attributed the discomfort to a sciatic nerve problem before his health deteriorated rapidly.

Initial diagnosis and rapid decline

By late August 1715, court physicians realized the leg pain was not caused by sciatica but by gangrene that had already spread across the monarch's left leg. By that stage, the king's condition was deemed irreversible.

The new research suggests the gangrene was merely the final phase of a complex, undetected underlying disease. Calciphylaxis primarily affects individuals with severe kidney problems, causing calcium to accumulate in small blood vessels. This build-up restricts blood circulation and leads to tissue damage.

In the case of Louis XIV, researchers concluded that this process likely produced initial leg lesions that facilitated a subsequent infection. The gangrene that marked his final days resulted directly from this earlier, unnoticed vascular disorder.

Scientific evidence from heart fragment

Investigators reached their conclusions by studying historical documentation of the king's illness and conducting analysis on a fragment of his embalmed heart. The testing pointed to an unusual infection involving a fungal pathogen.

The study authors noted that this explanation accounts for both the physical lesions Louis XIV suffered and the rapid deterioration of his health in his final weeks. However, the researchers emphasized that their conclusions remain a hypothesis rather than a certainty, given that more than 300 years have passed since the monarch's death.

Historical context and legacy

Louis XIV remains the longest-reigning monarch in European history, having acceded to the French throne in 1643 at the age of four. Known for centralizing royal power at the Palace of Versailles, his physical health was closely documented by court physicians throughout his 72-year reign.

In accordance with 18th-century French royal tradition, the monarch's body was embalmed after death, with internal organs and the heart preserved separately. That preservation practice provided modern medical researchers with the biological material needed to conduct tissue analyses centuries later.
