Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has launched a political tour across northern Greece, using government credibility as his central message ahead of the Thessaloniki International Fair during the first weekend of September.
The fair will serve as the starting point for an extended political campaign leading toward Greece's next national parliamentary elections in the spring of 2027.
Speaking at the official inauguration of the metro extension to Kalamaria, Mitsotakis highlighted key infrastructure projects completed or underway across northern Greece. These public works include the Thessaloniki flyover highway project and the comprehensive redevelopment of the Thessaloniki International Fair grounds.
Addressing political opponents directly, Mitsotakis said government infrastructure projects were not being carried out as party payback or to secure future votes. He stated that the primary duty of any government is to ensure economic growth reaches every region of the country and creates better living conditions for all citizens.
The prime minister's tour includes visits to Florina, Ptolemaida, and Kozani, where he is scheduled to address local citizens. During these stops, Mitsotakis is highlighting past government achievements alongside future policy priorities, saying the region's future is full of prospects and promising to overturn decades of stagnation through sustainable development.
New Democracy regional campaign strategy
In the days leading up to September 5, government and ruling New Democracy party delegations will visit 17 electoral districts across Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Western Macedonia, and Central Macedonia. Northern Greece is a major target area for the party, as voters in the region represent approximately 30 percent of the national electorate.
For the first time this year, New Democracy is deploying ministerial teams daily to every Regional Unit across northern Greece. Party secretary Konstantinos Kyranakis drafted the outreach schedule to combine local visits with announcements of completed projects and fully funded infrastructure initiatives that feature clear completion timelines.
New Democracy is Greece's governing centre-right political party, led by Mitsotakis since 2016. The annual Thessaloniki International Fair, held every September in Greece's second-largest city, is traditionally the platform where Greek prime ministers deliver major keynote addresses outlining national economic and political agendas for the upcoming year.
